The effect of cardiovascular risk factors on stress-induced blood pressure increase in medical students

  • II. Department of Internal Medicine Department of Cardiology; Cardiovascular Center
Background and objective: We confirmed 25 years ago, that the final exam at the university – as a stress situation – increases blood pressure in medical students; the positive familiar history increases, but the regular sport decreases this reaction. The aim of the present study was whether nowadays our observations are similar then were 25 years ago? How do the well-known cardiovascular risk factors and the social environment influence the stress-induced blood pressure increase? Design and methods: Blood pressure was measured in 60 senior medical students with mercury sphygmomanometer during rest and immediately before their final exam. A questionnaire was completed about potential cardiovascular risk factors (past medical history, sport, smoking, obesity, alcohol- and caffeine consumption). Results: Results are summarized in table 1. Known/treated hypertension 25 years ago: 9/3, nowadays: 8/3. Nowadays, the stress-induced blood pressure increase was significantly higher (p<0,001) among hypertensive, overweight and regular drinker students and in case of they had a first-relative suffering from hypertension. Conclusions: The acute psychical stress situation (final exam) increases significantly the blood pressure in the normal range among medical students. The degree of blood pressure raise is fundamentally influenced by the lifestyle, so the early prevention is one of the most important objects.
