Prof. Dr. István Karádi graduated in 1975 at the Semmelweis Medical School in Budapest. Since 1976 he has been worked at the 3rd Department of Internal Medicine as professor assistant, senior lecturer and since 2001 as the head of the department. Between 1985 and 2000 he worked at the Medical Section of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences as scientific secretary. In 2006 he was elected the dean of the Medical Faculty of Semmelweis University. Between 1998 and 2006 he served in the capacity of the chief secretary of the Hungarian Society of Internal Medicine. The main topic of his scientific interest is lipidology, especially the role of lipoproteins in atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. He published papers in internationally accepted journals on diabetic lipoprotein alterations, pathological lipid fractions and secondary lipoproteindisorders. He participated in epidemiological studies concerning cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndromeand diabetic complications.

Abstract

Lipoprotein disorders play a central role in the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. According to large epidemiological studies, LDL-cholesterol level has a very strong relationship to atherosclerosis and consecutive vascular complications. HDL-cholesterol has a protective role against plaque formation and its physiological level decreases the atherosclerotic process. The combination of pathological lipid alterations, as it can be detected in metabolic syndrome, enhances the risk for cardiovascular diseases. Acute coronary syndrome is a vascular disaster and needs immediate intervention. Compared with patients with stable coronary artery disease, the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events is two to six times higher in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Cholesterol lowering agents, ecpecially statins have a long-term efficacy for primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease. Recently trial-based evidences support the early and late benefit of these agents after acute coronary syndrome, as well.
