Abstract

Relationship between regular physical training and cardio-vascular system is especially important because 1) the passive way of life endangers health first of all through the cardiovascular system; 2) the endurance performance is mostly limited by the cardiovascular adaptation. In the present work main characteristics of the athlete’s heart and its some influencing factors (kind of sports, age, gender and level of physical fitness) are summarized. An important characteristic of the athletes’ heart is the left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, which is, however, not associated with impaired diastolic function. The athletes’ lower restingand exercise heart rate is due to the relatively longer diastole. Athletic characteristics are mostly associated with endurance activity. LV hypertrophy ischaracteristic to the young and young adult athletes, the improved diastolic function is more evident in the older age, training-bradycardia is present at all ages. LV muscle mass is smaller in both non-athletic and in athletic females than in males. Athletic characteristics are present not only in the top-level athletes but also in the lower-level athletes.
